Pigeons

Common pigeons
coo under the eaves
just outside my window
above the balcony

I like to call them
rock doves
their more sophisticated name
it makes my bird-watching
sound more serious
In listening to the pigeons
you’d think
they never leave
but a more careful observer
sees families
transient
they make their home
only for a time
then move on

I like to think
I can tell them apart
I see them so often
and mourn when they leave
I’ve named them all
they take their names with them

The birds are
my constant companions
not always welcome
when they make noise all day
but it reminds me
I’m not alone
and even though
we don’t speak
sometimes you just
need to know
you’re not
the only one breathing
